Jabber also known as the "Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol" (XMPP) is a open XML based messenger protocol. In comparasion to most other Instant messenger messengers it uses HTTP to transfer data so it is more difficult to censor and most clients are able to encrypt the connection to the server with SSL so your censoring ISP can not look at the traffic. Thats a major advantage to the other instant messenger networks like ICP, AIM, MSN Messenger or Yahoo Messenger. With most Jabber servers it is possible to connect to the other networks too. This is archived via transports where you have to register your login information from the other messenger service on your Jabber server and then enter new contacts.

Google talk always uses the Jabber protocol.
