Skype

Skype is a software which allows users to make telephone calls over the Internet. Calls to other users of the programm (PC to PC) are free, while calls to normal telephones cost money. The software is available for Microsoft Windows as well as Linux and Apple MacOS.

Instead of using a standard VoIP (Voice over IP) protocol like SIP they use a proprietary and undocumented peer-to-peer protocol which is encrypted. That makes it very difficult to censor and/or to monitor. Because of that China provides a modified version called "TOM-Skype" to its citizens which allows censorship and monitoring. Avoid using another version than the official one from skype.com.
