WinGate is a special kind of proxy server. It is commercial software and only available for Windows. In the 90s it was a very common program to share a Internet connection in little companies. Because of its insecure default configuration (until a release in 1997) there where many open WinGates on the Internet which could be used to bypass Internet censorship.

Depending on the port they provide different services. On port 1080 a socks proxy, on port 23 a Telnet service and sometimes also on port 21 a FTP proxy.

Several years later the Sobig virus installed a pirated copy of WinGate 5 on the infected computers and opened a socks proxy on an uncommon port to allow the creators of the virus to send spam emails. So many people used that WinGates to bypass Internet censorship. The current version is wingate 6.2.2 from July 2007.
